Hey friend,
Around the holidays, I used to pause and wonder: why don’t I feel the same loneliness or depression that so many service members struggle with during this season?
The truth is, the holidays can be really tough when you’re serving away from home. I remember those moments; the quiet in between missions, the empty chair at the dinner table, the traditions you just can’t recreate when you’re stationed abroad. Even with the bond of fellow service members, there’s still an ache for family and the comfort of home. That’s why community matters so much. A simple call, a shared meal, or just showing up for one another can make all the difference.
For me, even when I was oceans away from my family, I didn’t carry that same weight of loneliness. Looking back, I realize why: I always had community. And that sense of belonging carried me through.
And here’s my side note: to every service member navigating this season away from loved ones, know that you are seen, valued, and never truly alone.
A Story from Korea
When I first got orders to South Korea, I was terrified.
My mom was nervous. Political tensions were rising. And I had no idea what life would look like.
But the moment I boarded that plane and locked eyes with a familiar face, all my fear melted away. From that moment until the day I left, I was never alone. I met so many friends during my assignment.
We celebrated every holiday together. We laughed through long nights. We checked in on each other. One Christmas, when I tried to isolate, my friends literally knocked on my door to make sure I was okay.
We became family. Rank, race, and background didn’t matter. We wore the same uniform, and that bond meant: I’ve got your back, you’ve got mine.
That’s the kind of community that changes you. And it’s the part of military life I miss the most.

Life After the Military
Here’s the hard truth: community isn’t a “given” in civilian life. You have to go out and build it.
Now, living abroad without that built-in military network, I’ve had to stretch myself. As an ambivert with a strong introvert side, it’s not always easy. But here’s what I’ve learned: Community doesn’t just find you — you have to choose it.
Resources to Find Your People
Whether you’ve just moved abroad, started over in a new city, or are simply craving connection, here are some resources that help me (and might help you, too):
Meetup.com – Local groups for everything from fitness to book clubs.
Internations.org – Perfect for expats living abroad.
VolunteerMatch.org – Give back while meeting people with shared values.
Facebook Groups / Reddit Communities – Niche groups for travelers, veterans, and locals.
Eventbrite.com – Discover free and paid events in your area.
GirlTrek.org – A national movement of Black women leveraging walking as a practical tool for radical self-care and community building.
ChooseFI.com – A global financial independence community sharing tools, stories, and meetups to help people design freedom-filled lives.

My Challenge to You
If you’re feeling lonely or disconnected, don’t wait for community to come knocking — go create it. Push yourself to step outside your comfort zone, just like I’m doing now.
Because I promise, when you find your people, the weight lifts. And you’ll look back one day, just like I look back at Korea, and realize those connections were the real gift.
So, my question for you this week is:
👉 What’s one small step you can take this week to build or rebuild community?
Hit reply and let me know. I’d love to feature your responses in the next issue.
