Living in the UK while working corporate hours means my days can be long; commuting, working, squeezing in gym time and personal growth. I’m grateful, but let’s be honest: it gets tiring. That’s why I live for travel. It’s my reset button, my joy spark.

And nothing compares to the build-up before a trip; the countdown to boarding the plane. I’m grinning through security, strolling the airport like it’s a runway, practically buzzing with excitement.

Insider secret: I get nervous until we’re in the air (headphones on, volume up). But the second we land, all that melts away.

When I stepped off the plane in Portugal, the air felt like a whisper—warm, soft, carrying the scent of the ocean. After leaving behind the grey skies of the UK, this moment felt like sunshine wrapping me in possibility.

We started in Lisbon, the capital, staying one night before catching the train south. The train isn’t glamorous, but watching the countryside roll past, the vineyards, the terracotta rooftops, was part of the adventure.

Arriving in Lagos, our apartment-style stay felt like a hidden gem: spacious (a rarity in Europe!), practical, and yes! complete with a washer. Travelers know that’s the real luxury.

Our first adventure was a Benagil Cave boat tour. The Algarve cliffs are pure magic; golden stone against turquoise water. Waves echoed like drums inside the caves, gulls called overhead, and the sunlight spilled through natural arches like spotlights on stage.

One rock formation was called “God’s Eye.” To us, it looked more like a pig’s nose. But that’s the beauty of travel; it’s the laughter, the inside jokes, the moments you’ll never forget.

✨ Pro Tip: Book a private boat if you can. The group tours are fine, but private means unhurried photos, uninterrupted views, and a touch of luxury.

The next day, we booked a kayak tour of the caves. Here’s the truth: we had no idea how to kayak. Within minutes, we weren’t gliding gracefully through the water; we were bumping into rocks like we were playing bumper cars with the cliffs.

But our “fail” turned into the best memory. Instead of paddling with the crowd, we got our own support boat. Music playing, Afrobeats filling the air, sun on our faces, and saltwater splashing; it became a private party on the sea. We danced, we slid into the waves with life vests, and we created joy out of chaos.

That’s when I realized: sometimes the best adventures are the ones that don’t go as planned.

What made this trip magical wasn’t just the cliffs or caves; it was the energy. Our laughter carried across the water, and people couldn’t help but smile. A solo traveler gravitated toward us, and soon we were sharing meals and stories.

Another stranger stopped us just to say our joy made her day. That reminded me; Joy radiates. Happiness spreads. The real souvenirs of travel are the connections we make and the light we leave behind.

Lagos, Portugal wasn’t just about cliffs and beaches—it was about energy, laughter, and rediscovering joy. Travel doesn’t just reset me; it connects me deeper to myself and to others. And sometimes, all it takes is sunshine, the sea, and a little laughter to remember what really matters.
