👋 Hey Traveler,
I will always preach the importance of community because it can transform your travels. Let me share why my very first trip to Africa, Kenya to be specific, for my birthday, became one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had.
Why Kenya?

When I did my solo trip to Bali, I met two wonderful friends, one from Kenya and one from Jamaica, through WhatsApp groups. Over time, we built a small bond. Originally, I thought we’d all meet again in Dubai, but life had other plans; However, my Kenyan friend was going to be in Nairobi, Kenya, at the same time I wanted to celebrate my birthday. That connection gave me the confidence to choose Kenya as my first African destination. I was so excited!
Community in Action
Before I even landed in Nairobi, my Jamaican friend connected me with a local driver. That one introduction changed everything, having a trusted local made getting around seamless and gave me access to experiences I never would’ve discovered on my own..
He helped me get a SIM card and register for M-Pesa (Kenya’s mobile money system, essential for paying everywhere). - Highly recommend
He knew the must, do spots and even helped build my itinerary.
From day one, I wasn’t alone; I had a community.

The Social House
I stayed at The Social House, a boutique luxury hotel that was worth every penny. The service, vibe, and comfort made it one of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had. Sometimes splurging on comfort enhances the whole trip, and this was definitely one of those times.

Loved Everything About This!
What made The Social House unforgettable wasn’t just the beautiful rooms; it was the energy. Every night felt alive, with live musicians, unique events, and a rooftop bar that brought travelers and locals together. It wasn’t just a hotel stay; it was a community in motion.

Safari & Game Drives
No trip to Kenya is complete without a safari. My driver set me up with an incredible guide who helped me spot lions, rhinos, giraffes, and zebras, even outside the Great Migration season. Seeing lions in the wild was a dream come true.
Naivasha Adventures
One of my favorite (and most unforgettable) experiences was in Lake Naivasha. We started with a boat ride that quickly turned into a “hold your breath” moment, the engine stopped right there in the middle of the water… surrounded by hippos. If you know anything about hippos, you know they’re no joke. For a second, I thought, “Well, this might be it.” Thankfully, another boat came alongside to distract them, and we got moving again. Scary, but definitely unforgettable.
Later that same day, I had another close call. I had just stepped out of the restroom when a whole herd of rhinos came up on me. There I was, standing alone, realizing just how dangerous it was to be in their path. Let’s just say I didn’t stick around long; I ran for it! Looking back, it’s one of those moments that’s funny now, but not so much in the moment.
Still, Naivasha was pure magic. Walking alongside zebras and giraffes, and even riding horses with wildlife all around me, it truly felt like stepping into The Lion King.

Local Connection
One of the most powerful memories was eating with the locals, sharing food with our hands, laughing, learning Swahili words, and truly feeling like family, even though days ago we were only strangers. That’s how community starts!

While some of these highlights I did do. Two of them were recommended by locals, and I will be doing them on my next trip! However, I did not want you to miss them!

Final Thought
Community is why Kenya wasn’t just a trip; it was an experience that shaped me. From friends I met in Bali to sharing meals with locals, I was reminded that travel is less about the place and more about the people you connect with along the way.
